Also known as Swamp Hoverfly or Sun Fly (Helophilus pendulus). This particular type is about double the size of a 'normal' hoverfly. 60mm macro lens + 36mm extension tube + macro twin flash set.

they're huge. come to think of it, i've only ever seen houseflies & horseflies. never a hoverfly.

we have a tree that has a ton of bees, but i've tried to photograph them so i know for sure they are bees. :) i've seen the stingers.

Perhaps there isn't much room left for the hoverflies in your area then. They seem to like yellow flowers a lot, but are not particularly picky, I think. Anyway, hope you'll get to see them one day. They're quite funny to watch :)
