A close-up of the Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae) at the Copenhagen Zoo. He's only four months old and very fast to learn new tricks. Also see:

Kookaburras are nice looking birds.

We have a bunch of them living near my house and just about every evening as the sun is going down they let our a terrific raucous which is great :)

They tend to sit up in the trees though so I rarely get a chance to photograph them as I need a bit more reach in my lens.

Cheers!

I've only had one chance so far when they were sitting on my neighbours back deck. The photos weren't great though, but I tried.

I did learn that they had nictitating membranes on their eyes though.

I told my wife that to start with the bird had one eye that looked a bit white and looked bad, then later it looked like both eyes were good, and she told me about the membranes in their eyes.

They tend to sit up very high on power polls near my place, but they are too high up to take photos off.

Yes, I've noticed those membranes too. Also on other birds of prey. You can actually see it in this photo of a Harris' Hawk: [link]

That is a very nice photo you've taken there of the Harris Hawk. I was hoping to get a few birds of Prey photos from Australia Zoo recently, but the weather in South East Queensland has been bad for a week or so, and Australia Zoo was flooded out and closed the day we went.

Oh well. I'll try again next time :)
